Topical Anesthetics
Topical Anesthetics
Topical anesthesia is needed for common procedures such as suturing, wound cleaning, injection administration, cosmetic and laser procedures, tattooing, etc. The ideal topical anesthetic would provide complete anesthesia following a simple pain-free application, not contain narcotics or controlled substances, and be safe to use.
One of the most common local anesthetics produced by our laboratory include a combination of the topical anesthetics lidocaine and tetracaine in addition to epinephrine which is a vasoconstrictor. This gel is known as LET Anesthetic Gel. It has been used to treat pain associated with lacerations and for cosmetic procedures where the skin may be broken such as cosmetic or regular tattooing. The vasoconstrictor helps control swelling and bleeding. The onset of action is usually 20 to 30 minutes after being applied.
A triple-anesthetic gel containing benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine (BLT Gel) has also been reported to be effective when applied prior to laser and cosmetic procedures. Convenience of application without need for occlusion is an advantage of this topical anesthetic gel in addition to a rapid onset of action of 20 to 30 minutes compared to 1 to 2 hours often observed with EMLA cream. The following article reported that a triple-anesthetic gel containing benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine (”BLT”) applied prior to treatment with a 532-nm KTP laser resulted in significantly lower pain scores than with 3 other topical anesthetics at 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes after application.

Finally our lab also produces a lidocaine and prilocaine combination (similar to EMLA) however LET and BLT gels are generally considered superior due to a more rapid onset of action and they do not require occlusion.
