Pediatric Compounding

For a long time there has been a restriction in therapeutic options for infants due to a limited range of pediatric formulations on the market. The doses, dose forms and flavors of many commercially available medications are often designed for adults and unsuitable for these sometimes challenging young patients. In order to increase compliance and improve therapeutic outcomes extemporaneous compounding can help overcome the obstacles mentioned above.

Altered Dose Forms

The dose form of the medication used can be tailored to suite the infants requirements. Rather than being restricted to tablets that were designed for adults we can prepare specially flavored mixtures, suspensions, chews or suppositories to make administering these medications easier for the parents.

Altered Dosages

Rather than being restricted to doses often designed for adults the strength of each dose can be tailor made for the infant in order to minimise any side effects.

Flavours

And finally a wide variety of palatable flavors are available to mask the taste of the medication to suite the most finicky pallet. Flavors such as chocolate, raspberry, vanilla and bubblegum are available. This helps improve compliance and makes the parents job a little easier.

Formulations

Many of the formulations used in our laboratory come from The Pediatric Drug Formulations Text, 5th Edition which contains over 280 formulations for infants and children commonly used around the world. It includes ophthalmic, rectal, oral and injectable products. This text was developed by The Ohio State University Children’s Hospital. In addition to the formulations it also cites very valuable stability data for these preparations often which is very difficult to obtain. The wealth of information provided by this text ensures that a reliable, tested and stable preparation can be produced for the benefit of all pediatric patients.
