Histadelia – Under Methylation
Histadelia is an inherited condition characterized by elevated blood levels of histamine. Histamine excess can be manifest as asthma, vasomotor rhinitis, allergic skin disorders with pruritis, excess stomach acid production, saliva, tears, and thin nasal and bronchial secretions, and certain types of vascular headaches.
For some individuals, high levels of blood histamine have psychological, behavioral, and cognitive symptoms. 15-20% of schizophrenics and many suffers of depression may have histadelia. Suffers may be suicidally depressed and fall prey to obsessions, compulsions, and addictions.
Other symptoms include: Good tolerance of cold, Poor tolerance of heat, Unexplained nausea, Poor pain tolerance, Excess/abundant saliva in mouth, Histamine speeds up metabolism producing a tendency towards hyperactivity, Frequent colds/flu, Phobias, highly motivated and hard-driving personality, good creativity/imagination, high libido, joint pain/swelling/stiffness, Excess perspiration, Warm skin.
Professor Pfeiffer and expert in this field considers basophil counts greater than 50 cells/cu mm and histamine levels greater than 70 ng/ml (0.629umol/L) diagnostic for histadelia.
It is common for suffers to also have low copper levels as copper is part of the enzyme histaminase which is involved in the metabolism of histamine. Copper should also be tested by either 24 hour urine copper or serum ceruloplasmin.
High-histamine levels are due to a metabolic imbalance known as under-methylation, a biochemical process responsible for the elimination of histamine as well as other functions, such as the production of certain neurotransmitters and if low creates a deficiency in serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine and hence why suffers exhibit psychological, behavioral, and cognitive symptoms.
Treatment involves the amino acid methionine which detoxifies histamine by methylating the ring structure forming N-methylhistamine. Calcium helps release the bodies store of histamine, while Zinc aids the calcium-methionine program and provide sufficient relief.
Typical treatment includes the following nutrients in high doses: calcium, magnesium, Vit B6, Vit C, zinc and methionine.
Suffers should also limitation their intake of folic acid, manganese and histidine (common in animal proteins).
If the histadelic cooperates with treatment and works to give up detrimental addictions, the prognosis is good with improvement usually noted in 4-8 weeks with about 3-6 months needed to correct this chemical imbalance.
To find out more about this consult a nutritionist or see Mental Illness: The Nutrition Connection, a book by Prof. Carl Pfeiffer.
Our Laboratory produces a comprehensive supplement used to specifically treat histadelia. It contains high doses and uses the most bioavailable forms of these nutrients to maximise absorption. Click here for details on this Histadelia Treatment. For a less comprehensive and thus cheaper version click here on undermethylator capsules.
Alternatively if you also have pyroluria and high copper we also produce Primer Undermethylating Pyrole capsules to treat all three conditions. If you have histadelia and high copper levels (no pyroluria) we also have Primer Undermethylating capsules available.
